Frequently asked questions
If you’re new to cognitive behavioural therapy, it’s normal to have a lot of questions - here I answer some of the most commonly asked. If you have a question that’s not answered on here,
please contact me
-
How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person. Some people may benefit from a relatively small number of sessions, while others may need longer-term therapy. We will review your progress regularly.
-
What happens at the first appointment?
We will spend time understanding your current difficulties, what you would like to achieve from therapy, and how CBT may be able to help.
-
Will I have homework between sessions?
CBT often includes practising skills between sessions. Any tasks or exercises will be agreed together and kept manageable and realistic.
-
What if I’m unsure whether therapy is right for me?
We can discuss this during an initial telephone consultation and consider whether CBT may be helpful and whether we feel we would be a good fit to work together.
-
Do I need a diagnosis?
No. You do not need a diagnosis before starting therapy. We will work together to understand your difficulties and identify any patterns that may be keeping them going.
-
Do I have to talk about my past?
Not necessarily. CBT mainly focuses on the here and now, although past experiences may sometimes be explored where they help us understand current patterns.
-
How can I make the most of therapy?
Some people find it helpful to make notes during or after sessions. Being willing to reflect and practise new skills between sessions can also help you get the most from therapy.
-
Are my therapy sessions confidential?
Yes. Sessions are confidential.
I may discuss aspects of our work in professional supervision, but your identity will not be disclosed.
Information may need to be shared if there are significant concerns about risk to you or someone else. Wherever possible, I would discuss this with you first.
-
What information will you keep?
I keep information such as your contact details and therapy notes.
These are stored securely on WriteUpp in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR requirements, and records are retained for 7 years.
-
What if I need urgent or crisis support?
I am unable to provide crisis or emergency support.
If you need immediate help, please contact your GP, call NHS 111, or in an emergency call 999.
You can also contact the Samaritans on 116 123 for free, confidential emotional support.
